Outrageous Demand
A young man arrived for his first day at work.
"Mop the floor please." instructed the boss.
"But I'm a University graduate!" protested the young man.
"Oh, sorry, let me have the mop and I'll show you how to do it." offered the boss.
Though the joke is on the universities, it is no joke that a lack of family pursuits could result in youngsters who have never learned to do the simplest chores.
Teaching a toddler to use a mop needs patience. I can still remember trying to use a mop when it was too heavy for me. I can remember helping to carry bricks, and how annoyed I was that the men would only let me carry one brick at a time, instead of a stack of them as they were doing.
I know that it is quicker for parents to do it themselves, but I'm glad that my mother allowed me (as a privillege) to finish mopping the floor for her, inspite of the water that I spilled now and then. I wouldn't have been as eager to learn by the time I was seven years old.
