Sewing Machine Repair For Kids
My father taught me, when I was a child, to dismantle machines carefully, putting every screw back as soon as possible, and keeping everything else laid out in order. He showed me how to make little sketches to remind me of how to put everything back together again.
Repairing my sewing machine as a family pursuit? You must be joking! It’s far to expensive to let my kids near it!
I don’t blame you for thinking twice about it! However think about this possibility if you have several children of different ages. The eldest is smug because she is the only one who is allowed to align the needle and adjust the timing. She has reason to be smug, because she started her “apprenticeship” in the same place as the youngest child.
Have you ever looked underneath where you do the sewing? There is a shuttle covered with a thin film of oil, and dust that collects in that oil. It really is quite messy, and if it gets too bad, sooner or later your machine will stop working properly.
So what does your five-year-old have to learn to clean the sewing machine?
- How to open the machine
- how to prevent the machine smashing when it tips over
- which things need cleaning and which ones don’t
- which things should be oiled, and which things must never be oiled
- how to do the cleaning and oiling
- how to lift the machine back into place
- how to fasten the machine closed again
If you are standing there to make sure that the machine doesn’t crash to the table or floor there is nothing there that could cause any damage to your valuable machine, and junior will have learned that machines aren’t some kind of magic beyond understanding.
Tony has written a book now that explains exactly how to do each job, in the simplest and safest way. It is so simple that junior could probably do everything, but that would remove the challenge of one day being good enough to do what your oldest child is privilleged to do.
Very interesting.
I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
Great post! I really enjoyed this topic and can’t wait to read more!

good article, i will add my feeds.
Great stuff but I’m having a hard time viewing it on my ipod. The layout isn’t correct (maybe you can fix this). I’ll have to try again when I get home.
I’ll see what I can do, but I don’t really know how to set the page up for mobiles.
I’m curious to find out what blog platform you happen to be working with? I’m having some small security issues with my latest site and I would like to find something more secure. Do you have any solutions?
Hi,
I’m using the WordPress platform, but security is something that should be considered.
The first thing to consider is that you shouldn’t use admin as the main username, because the hackers expect you to.
I got most of my information from someone called Howie. I don’t know if it is still available, but if you go to http://www.howiebonus.com/contactus.html and contact howie, saying that you heard he produced an eBook about WordPress security, he might be able to help you. According to him it is a major problem, and I did have this site taken over by two phishing attacks on Westpac Bank. Westpac contacted me and I deleted the offending directories and changed all my usernames and passwords.
If you change all your usernames and passwords I suggest you keep all the details in an Excel file or use a Roboform program to keep track of your files. Either back up your Roboform data regularly, or have a booklet where you write all your password data with pen and ink.

I do like the manner in which you have framed this challenge plus it does offer us a lot of fodder for thought. On the other hand, from just what I have experienced, I simply just trust as other responses stack on that people today remain on point and not start on a tirade regarding some other news du jour. Yet, thank you for this exceptional piece and although I do not really go along with this in totality, I regard your standpoint.
